 Garden of Eden Ice Plateau

The name of this part of the South Island says it all. It is a spectacular area of glacial activity that lies right alongside the Main Divide. And the great thing about this location is that it is less than one hour’s flying time from Christchurch.

Your sightseeing flight will depart from the Helicentre and head out across the Canterbury Plains towards the Rakaia River. This wide braided river was formed many millennia ago by mighty rivers of ice and still carries the waters from what remains of these glaciers today. Our path over the narrow Rakaia Gorge will take us over the Mount Hutt ski area we’ll head into the eastern beginnings of the Southern Alps where some of New Zealand’s best heli-skiing terrain lies. We’ll also have the opportunity to view some of the country’s great high country station areas with the possibility of seeing the elusive Himalayan Thar which reside in these areas.

Arriving at the very source of the Rakaia river brings us to the Main Divide, the very backbone of the South Island. It is here that huge annual snowfalls have continued to sustain the glaciers many of which make up the Garden of Eden Ice Plateau. You’ll see huge snow plateaus, transverse crevasses and large bergschrunds along with steel-blue crystals of glacier ice. It is a spectacular area which is really only accessible from the air.

Departing from here, depending on the season, we can provide you with a gourmet picnic to enjoy on a mountain top or beside a mountain lake or, if it is a bit cold out we can stop off for lunch or light refreshments at the high country resort, Terrace Downs before returning to Christchurch.

Akaroa Harbour Cruise and Dolphin Experience

Let HELiPRO take you from the hustle and bustle of the city and skim you over the rugged terrain of Banks Peninsula which lies enroute to our destination, Akaroa.

Akaroa is an historic and picturesque seaside village located approximately 20 minutes flight time from Christchurch airport. (This quick scenic flight allows you to avoid the Akaroa Road which twists and turns its way over the hills, taking about 90 minutes to drive from Christchurch).

Once we put your feet back on the ground you will be whisked away by the award winning Black Cat Cruises. Your skipper will comprehensively narrate your cruise informing you of all there is to know about the nature, wildlife and history of Akaroa. Dolphin watching is the highlight of this tour with the stars of the show being New Zealand’s very own Hector’s Dolphin, (the world’s smallest and rarest breed).

Also on the trip you will catch glimpses of the White Flippered Blue Penguin, the smallest penguin in the world. You’ll also see many other different bird species and the New Zealand Fur Seal sunning themselves on the rocks. On this two hour cruise your skipper will endeavor to show you all of this wildlife plus the many sea caves and volcanic cliffs. As Akaroa was a live volcano nine million years ago there are many spectacular ancient lava flows to be seen. There is also the incredible Scenery Nook, an amazing pink, purple and red volcanic amphitheatre that will take your breath away. This really is a fantastic trip.

Trips on the cruise depart daily at 1.30pm and also at 11am from November to April.

An optional lunch stop at French Farm Winery is available on this trip. Pricing available on request
